Hampton native, Crystal Johnson has lived and worked in the Hampton Roads area all of her life. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts , Master of Fine Arts in Visual Studies (with a concentration in mixed media art and ceramics) and has a professional teaching license . She began exhibiting professionally as a sophomore in college and has maintained an actively extensive exhibition record since that time, participating in over 65 national, regional, invitational, group and solo exhibitions. She has been the recipient of various awards, fellowships and grants for her figurative ceramic sculptures and mixed media compositions to include, but not limited to, Hampton Roads Convention Center Purchase Award, Best in Show, the Joseph Gillard Ceramic Award, Jane Butler Memorial Award, and she has had her work published in the International Review for African American Art (IRAAA), Hampton Roads Monthly, Hampton Roads Daily Press newspaper, and the Hampton Roads Tourism Guide. Crystal Johnson has served as an art educator in public school, college, workshop and museum settings. In addition, she has served as the Director of Education in a museum setting where she re-invented and cultivated their children's education, outreach and adult art programs.
